Thanthonni, produced by Vyshakha Rajan, is a commercial film that has nothing new to offer us! Though fast progressing and engaging, it reminds us dozens of old movies, including Suresh Gopi starrer Lelam. There is no credibility in the storyline and the film tends to be dull at times. Despite all this, Prithviraj delivers a whopper performance in a script that offers him little scope and a Prithviraj fan would surely adore the film!
The story revolves around a brat Kochu Kunju (Prithviraj), the youngest member of the wealthy Vadakkan Veettil family. He is an unruly and spoiled child, who left home during his early teens and is back after almost a decade. The first half establishs the hero, his virtues, his comic credentials and romance. The whole family is waiting for his consent to share the properties, but then, Kochu Kunju does not turn up for it. The reason is revealed in a flashback in the second half.
If you are able to sit through Thanthonni, wishing all the while that it had something better to say, it’s all because of its lead actor Prithviraj who delivers an impressive performance. However, Prithviraj as Konchu Kunju has failed to a great extend in maintaining the image that he gained though his action movie Puthiya Mugham. He has attempted to do comic scenes aided by Suraj Venjaramoodu and Jagathy Sreekumar, but they weren’t impressive and lacked natural effect. The other actors in the supporting cast have hardly anything to do except for Saikumar as Kochukunju’s father and yesteryear’s heroine Ambika as protagonist’s mother.
The storyline looks absolutely concocted and silly, with every effort intended at deifying the hero. The technical aspects are a big letdown. Sajeth Menon’s camera rarely succeeds in presenting even half decent visuals and the music by Tej Mervin lacks any merit. Director George Varghese did not prove his best in Shahid’s weaky script.
